PHOENIX RANCH 5046 Midway Rd, Vacaville 95688
Phoenix Ranch, privately owned by Dr. Chan and the Buderi family, was established in 2001 as a haven for people and animals and a place to try out ways of raising and working with many species. Through the years, we've learned what environmental factors and training techniques fit their natural inclinations to make them happier and better companions for people.
In support of CETA Foundation's mission, Phoenix Ranch is offering several programs by appointment. Participants are encouraged to bring their curiosity, grubby clothes and shoes, and cameras. Donations help cover operational costs.
Meet the extensive animal family of African parrots, miniature and "big" horses, miniature cattle, pot-bellied pigs, chickens, sheep, bunny and of course, dogs & cats, Learn how we teach them to peacefully co-exist, how we keep them healthy and happy. If we feel the animals are in the right mood, you will be able to handle, feed, and play with them. Be prepared to smile!
Tour of Phoenix Ranch: 60-90 minutes depending on attention span of participants (children in backpacks and strollers not included in head count if they stay "underwraps" during tour.) A great outing for families, school & youth groups, home-schoolers and animal lovers of all ages!. Kids can ride a pony after their tour for an additional donation (please request at time of reservation.)
$5 per person, $50 minimum + $5 per pony ride
Picnic/Birthday Parties: Bring your friends and refreshments to Phoenix Ranch and enjoy the view of the Coast Ranges & Mount Diablo from our favorite “barn.” Take pictures and play with many of the animals. Ranch tour included. 2 hour party
$200 donation. With pony rides $300
Ranch Tag-along: Spend a morning, afternoon or whole day with the ranch staff as they feed and care for the animals. Participants will be allowed to assist as much as we feel it is safe. You will learn a ton about animal husbandry, behavior and communication with one-on-one instruction as we go through our chores. Participants who want to pitch in with ranch projects and grunt work are welcome to stay a little longer! We might have you groom & exercise the horses, play with the baby birds, help with irrigation and pasture management, fix fences, buck hay...
Donation: $20 per participant for 3-4 hour session. Minimum 2 participants per session.
The CETA Animal Experience: Lessons on animal care and handling in a more structured format. Appropriate for animal-assisted therapy, dealing with animal phobias, or just plain learning. see "Interactive Learning---The CETA Animal Experience"
Volunteer/Internships: If you think you would like to volunteer to help on the ranch, we ask that you take a tour or ranch tag-along first to see if it's really for you. The work at the ranch is physically intense, fast-paced and often not very pleasant. For safety and logistical reasons, we cannot take volunteers who need close supervision or do not have a relatively stable schedule. You will need to have medical insurance and recognize that injuries can and do happen in this environment.
We occasionally take volunteers with special skills to work on projects (animal training, ranch repairs) but generally start volunteers on the weekday afternoon feeding and cleaning. Those who catch on quickly will find time to enjoy the animals and learn how to work with them on a different level. We offer transcript notations and independent study credit for UC Davis students.
