WITH OUR SPECIAL RANCH FEATURES!

Dr. Chan has developed Phoenix Ranch to be especially welcoming for kids who don't normally get exposure to country life. We find great joy in watching their faces as they go from being afraid to touch an animal to beaming with pride as they gain confidence and have a great time.  We emphasize that the animals need to be treated gently, kindly and respectfully so they will stay happy and friendly.  These are valuable lessons the kids will carry outside the gates of Phoenix Ranch.

While a visit to a ranch is a great experience, the biggest benefits come from multiple visits. This give children (and adults) a chance to get comfortable in a very different environment and start feeling like a part of the ranch family.  We welcome discussions on how we can work together with teachers, counselors. program leaders, agency directors...anyone who works with "children of all ages"...to customize activities for their needs. We are comfortable with kids who have behavioral issues or physical disabilities.

Phoenix Ranch has several unique features that will keep program participants busy and interested for multiple visits:

WORKING WITH RESCUE DOGS

Kids have a wonderful time meeting the resident and rescue dogs at the ranch.  There is a size and personality for everyone!  After a little play time, we can take the dogs on leashes out for a walk in the pasture to look at the plants and wildlife.

WORKING WITH A MILKING COW

Boo Cow is a Jersey cow who can be milked while she eats her breakfast or dinner.  The kids can help us set up her station, bring her and her family (Jed and baby Penny) out of their pen, clean up the pens and actually milk Boo Cow.  It's quite an experience for everyone!

HELPING WITH CHICKENS

From gathering eggs to moving chicks from pen to pen, visitors learn about how the eggs get to their kitchens and what it takes to make them.  Children learn to gently handle little babies and not be afraid of hens.

DRIVING HORSE CARTS

Phoenix Ranch had the good fortune to have a number of the horses trained by Ben Yoder in the Amish-style to be very safe and willing cart horses.  They have even been driven through downtown Vacaville and over freeway overpasses in heavy traffic.  Dee, Sylvie, Jack, Dusty and Dakota can be used to teach children fine motor skills and careful observation of body language.  They also must learn to be confident yet gentle to be successful in mastering this skill.  But the kids don't know about this---they just know it's fun!
